Episode 1: Elevating the Art of Flight Instruction and Flight Training

Welcome to FlightStack—a podcast by the FlightSense team that explores the intersection of aviation, training, and emerging technology. Whether you're a student pilot, flight instructor, or just someone who geeks out over aircraft systems and smart tech, this show is for you.

The way we train pilots is evolving—and it needs to. From aging training systems to CFI burnout, the challenges in aviation education are real. But so are the opportunities.

Episode 1

We’re kicking things off with two phenomenal guests who bring very different but equally valuable perspectives to the conversation.

  • Dr. Chris Johnson is a U.S. Air Force veteran, commercial pilot, and certified flight instructor with instrument and multi-engine ratings. He holds a PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering, has taught at Embry-Riddle, and specializes in human factors and flight simulation. He’s also the founder of PilotTrainingSystems.com.

  • Allison Tsay is a newly instrument-rated pilot and aerospace engineer with degrees from Harvard and MIT. She’s contributed to next-gen aerospace projects at Lockheed Martin’s Skunkworks and now plays a strategic role at RapidFlight, where she focuses on integrating AI into aviation systems.

Together, we discuss:

  • Why high CFI turnover is hurting the quality of instruction

  • The disconnect between training environments and real-world conditions

  • The dangers of weak weather training and scattered information sources

  • How AI (like our co-pilot, Amelia) can support pilots in the cockpit and beyond

  • What needs to change—in SIMs, in culture, and in curriculum—to build better, safer pilots

This conversation is full of honest insights, real-world experience, and forward-thinking ideas about where flight training is headed. Listen to Episode 1 below and let us know what you think the future of aviation training should look like.
